Ian Wicks has been helping people to move home since the dawn of time… okay so not that long, but you get the idea.
“You pick up tips along the way which make life easier. Hopefully, some of these will help you, too!”
-Ian
Before:
1.Set up your Postal Redirection with Royal Mail. This can be done quickly online, and you can redirect your mail for one month, three months or 12.
2.Obtain removal firm quotes and check that your contents will be insured in transit. Look at their reviews, too, and ask any friends who have moved recently for any recommendations.
3.Most moving-in days are Fridays (although removal firms are sometimes cheaper on other days if you can arrange this).
4.Book some time off work beforehand and after the weekend too.
5.Set aside plenty of time to pack and mark up boxes for the rooms they need to go into (label all boxes with a room name and put the corresponding room name on signs on the doors at the new house).
6.Ensure any building insurance and, if applicable, life insurance is in place from the exchange of contracts.
7.Book/order telephone lines, broadband installations, and satellite or cable TV installations.
8.If you have pets, book them on a mini-break for a few days while you move and settle in.
On the day:
1.Read the meters at your old and new homes and take photos. Advise your utility providers at both addresses.
2.Take an ‘essentials pack’ containing tea (the most important!), coffee, milk, bread, and toilet roll, and remember mugs, the kettle, and a spoon! Take this kit with you personally – then you won’t be hunting around for it later. My absolute essential item is chocolate digestives, actually…
3.Keep a screwdriver close at hand.
4.Also, ensure that light bulbs, fuses and extension leads are close at hand – they will come in handy.
5.Jump online or source a list of takeaways for your first night – you might be too shattered to cook!
